Short Songs for the Barely Conscious

Half Deaf Clatch

Melancholy, contemplative and minimal acoustic alt-blues, recorded in single takes with one microphone and a tube pre-amp pushed to it's limit - overdubbed with some guitar body percussion, tambourine and haunting slide guitar.

An album with real depth and a dark sense of humour.

"Shunning the normal, ruling musical orthodoxy, this is a truly unique bit of work, a concept sort of album based on a self-penned story bursting from the musical underground, filled with macabre characters, beliefs and thinking. And, as if that was not enough to keep the interest and surprise, he has delivered an album with only two tracks, both over twenty minutes long and each telling a profoundly disturbing story. In reality, each track is varied in tempo and texture, kicking off with an at times near-classical meter that echoes wildly, and a tad disturbingly at times, from track one, The Emissary, then with a continuing theme in track two, The Reaper." - Iain Patience, Blues Magazine, Netherlands

Written over the course of a year, and recorded in two days. The Life and Death of A.J Rail is a one man Blues & Roots concept album, in the raw downhome style of a by-gone age.

"I love this album from start to finish - the concept, the songs and the instrumentation. The Life and Death of A.J Rail is Clatch’s next logical step – and a huge step up it is too. A career defining album at this point in his career may be surprising, but Clatch’s drive, determination, and – most importantly – talent leave me in no doubt that this is THE ONE. If there is any justice this will be the album to move Clatch even further up in the blues scene - not just in the UK but Internationally. It is really that good. It paints fantastic pictures in my head of those tough times - always in black & white - dust, roads, travelling, life stories, death stories, everything. Wow! This is Clatch’s best work yet and deserves to be huge... And it will be!" - Gary Grainger, The Blues Show on Bishop FM

With typical Clatch invention, both musical and lyrical, the show unfolds before our very ears. There are scary moments, inspiring and poignant moments, and, finally, we feel as if we have cheated death and have been cured - though cured of what, with what, by whom, we may never know!
By the end of my visit, i felt dizzy, disgustipated, a little hysterical and very relieved - of my ills - and my cash" - Gary Grainger, DJ on the Award Winning Blues Show on Bishop FM
